Got my HIT degree in December 2020 and started working in the Health Information Management field in March 2016. I didn't actually start school until August 2017. I was laid off from the company I started with in 2016 back in 2020 due to Covid and was rehired last October in one of the first positions I started in 2016. Just this past week I started in a new role after 9 months prepping medical records. I am now working as a Health Information Specialist in release of information. I work with Ciox Health and from my experience they are the foundation to bigger and better opportunities. You can go anywhere you want in this field just from your experience working with Ciox Health.

I’m trying to decide between a job in medical services scheduling and this medical records. I’m being considered as I worked in scheduling for nearly 3 years. It’s a lot to keep track of and you have to have a rhythm because they need you to make a certain number of calls in and out a day. You have to know how to make things quick while demonstrating customer service. The pandemic made the job more challenging because more was added to our work load and things were changing at a dime. Despite all that, I love the job. Because it’s so busy, it typically makes the day go by fast. Most patients are a delight and I find it fun to show empathy, understanding and calming them down in rare cases where they are upset. Every rare case, you can get a disrespectful patient but it’s actually not all that common and if you show good customer service, it’s typically a done deal within seconds. But now I’m being considered for medical records which is less people interaction. So now I’m trying to figure out if because of that it’s less stressful, more rewarding, etc. I wonder if I have a greater chance of catching diseases since medical records take place from a hospital whereas these scheduling jobs typically take place from employee only locations or even remote in the case of the place considering me. So it’s a toss up. I also would like to know which would pay more. I am expecting 20 to 21 dollars if I select the scheduling role but can I make 25 dollars in medical records.I have my associates and bachelors in communications

This was very informative. I'm looking to start school in a few weeks to be an H.I.T. The main barrier may be upon finishing most places will want you to have 3-5 yrs experience. I need to know how to gain some experience upon finishing school that will allow a easy transition into my career. I don't want to be out of a job for 2+ years waiting for someone to give me a chance and lose the knowledge I've learned.

From this video you can go one of many ways. If you're wanting to do straight coding start out with the CPC which is outpatient coding. Here you can work your way into inpatient coding and earn the CCS. If you're wanting more well rounded I recommend the RHIA. It's at the bachelor's level and more doors open. You can start with the RHIT which is technical in nature and work to the RHIA or another bachelor's degree of your choosing. Good luck.

I need a daytime schedule without the high risk of infectious disease exposure. I think I have just found my niche. Im looking forward to this new career and still feel like Im helping people in some form or fashion in healthcare. Jackie answered every question I had been thinking about lately.
